Terms of Service

1. Eligibility

• You must be 18 years of age or older to use Treacle.
• By registering, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old and legally able to enter into a binding agreement.
• We may request proof of age and will terminate accounts of users found to be under 18.
• You must not be prohibited by applicable law from using dating or matchmaking services.

2. Your account

• You may create only one account. Multiple accounts per person are prohibited and may be terminated.
• Your profile must represent you accurately. No impersonation, fake identities, or misleading information.
• You are responsible for maintaining the security of your login credentials. Notify us immediately at hello@mytreacle.com if you suspect unauthorised access.
• We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, without prior notice for serious violations.

3. The service

3.1 What Treacle does

Treacle is an AI-powered matchmaking service. Through voice sessions, chat conversations, and optional data connections, Treacle builds a personality profile and uses it to find compatible matches. Matches are reviewed by our team before delivery.

3.2 AI companion

Treacle's companion is an artificial intelligence system, not a human. It is designed to help build your personality profile and facilitate matchmaking. The AI companion:

• Is not a licensed therapist, counsellor, or mental health professional
• Is not a substitute for professional mental health support
• May produce inaccurate, incomplete, or unexpected responses
• Should not be relied upon for medical, legal, financial, or safety advice

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact your local emergency services or a qualified mental health professional.

3.3 Voice sessions

• Voice sessions are recorded, transcribed, and analysed to build your personality profile.
• By participating in a voice session, you consent to this recording and analysis.
• Voice sessions are processed by third-party speech-to-text providers (see our Privacy Policy).

3.4 Matching

• Matches are generated by automated algorithms and reviewed by the Treacle team before delivery.
• Treacle provides one curated match per week (frequency may vary).
• We make no guarantee that you will receive a match, that any match will lead to a relationship, or that you will find a partner through our Service.
• Match decisions are at Treacle's sole discretion.
• You may request human review of any automated match decision by emailing privacy@mytreacle.com.

4. User content & conduct

4.1 Your content

• You retain ownership of content you submit (photos, messages, voice recordings).
• By submitting content, you grant Treacle a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use, process, and analyse that content solely for the purpose of providing the Service.
• WhatsApp or message exports: By uploading conversation exports, you confirm that you are the author or have consent from all parties to share them with Treacle for personality analysis.

4.2 Prohibited conduct

You agree not to:

• Harass, abuse, stalk, threaten, or intimidate any user
• Upload content that is illegal, defamatory, obscene, or harmful
• Impersonate another person or misrepresent your identity
• Upload messages from others without their consent
• Use the Service for commercial solicitation, advertising, or spam
• Scrape, reverse engineer, or extract data from the Service by automated means
• Attempt to circumvent security measures, rate limits, or access controls
• Use the Service to develop a competing product
• Share another user's match information, photos, or personal details with third parties without their consent
• Create multiple accounts or use accounts on behalf of others

4.3 Reporting & safety

If you experience harassment or feel unsafe, you can block and report users within the app. We investigate all reports and may take action including account suspension or termination. For immediate safety concerns, contact local emergency services.

5. Connected services & permissions

5.1 Google account connection

You may optionally connect your Google account. This grants Treacle read-only access to:

• Gmail (email subjects and sender names only — not email body content)
• Google Calendar (time blocks and categories — not event details)
• YouTube (watch history categories)
• Google Contacts (contact count and categories)
• Google Tasks (task categories)
• Google Fit (activity and sleep summaries)
• Google Photos (library metadata — not photo content)
• Google Drive (file type counts — not file content)

You can disconnect your Google account at any time. Disconnecting revokes our access and stops future data syncing. Previously extracted personality signals remain in your profile until you delete your account.

5.2 Apple Music

You may optionally connect Apple Music to share your listening history for taste profiling. You can disconnect at any time.

5.3 Device permissions

• Microphone: Required for voice onboarding sessions. Used only when you initiate a session.
• Camera: Used for taking profile photos.
• Photo library: Analysed on-device using Apple Vision or Google MLKit. No photos are uploaded to our servers. Only text labels leave your device.
• Location: Collected once during setup (foreground only). Rounded to city level (~11 km). Used to show nearby matches.
• Push notifications: Used to notify you of matches, messages, and important updates. You can disable in your device settings.

6. Subscription & payments

6.1 Pricing

• Treacle is available by subscription at £45 per month (or local equivalent).
• Pricing is subject to change with at least 30 days prior notice.
• A 1-week free trial is offered to new users. You will not be charged until the trial expires.

6.2 Billing & renewal

• Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless cancelled.
• iOS: Subscriptions are managed and billed by Apple through the App Store. Cancellation must be done through your Apple ID settings.
• Android: Subscriptions are managed and billed by Google through the Play Store. Cancellation must be done through your Google Play settings.
• Web: Subscriptions are processed by Stripe. You can cancel in your account settings.

6.3 Refunds

• No refunds for partial billing periods after payment has been processed.
• iOS and Android refund requests must be directed to Apple or Google respectively.
• If you believe you were charged in error, contact hello@mytreacle.com.

7. Intellectual property

• The Treacle name, logo, design, algorithms, and software are the property of Obscura Ventures Limited.
• You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works of the Service.
• Your personality profile and soul graph are generated by our algorithms. While you may request a copy of your data, the algorithms and models themselves are our intellectual property.

8. Privacy

Your privacy is fundamental to how we build Treacle. Our Privacy Policy explains in detail what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights. By using the Service, you acknowledge that you have read and understood our Privacy Policy.

9. Disclaimers

• Treacle is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, express or implied.
• We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of personality profiles, compatibility scores, or match predictions.
• We do not conduct criminal background checks on users.
• We are not responsible for the conduct of any user, whether online or offline.
• You use the Service and meet other users at your own risk.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:

• Obscura Ventures Limited shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service.
• Our aggregate liability for any claims arising from these Terms or the Service shall not exceed the total amount you paid to us in the 12 months preceding the claim.
• Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Obscura Ventures Limited, its directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including legal fees) arising from:

• Your violation of these Terms
• Your use of the Service
• Content you submit to the Service
• Your interactions with other users

12. Account deletion

• You may delete your account at any time through the app settings or by emailing privacy@mytreacle.com.
• Deletion removes all your personal data from our systems, including your personality profile, photos, messages, and match history, within 30 days.
• Active subscriptions should be cancelled separately through Apple, Google, or your account settings before deletion.
• Consent logs are retained for 7 years after deletion as required by law.

13. Suspension & termination

• We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms or engage in conduct that we determine is harmful to other users or the Service.
• For serious violations (harassment, fraud, illegal activity), we may terminate immediately without prior notice.
• For less serious violations, we will provide a warning where reasonably practicable.
• You may appeal a suspension by contacting hello@mytreacle.com.

14. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email or in-app notification at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of Treacle after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms. If you disagree with any changes, you may delete your account.

15. Governing law & disputes

• These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
• Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of England and Wales.
• If you are a consumer in the EU, you retain the benefit of any mandatory consumer protection provisions of your country of residence.
• Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

16. Open-source & third-party software

The Service uses open-source software components, each subject to their own licence terms. A list of key open-source dependencies is available upon request.

17. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
